CANDIDATE FILING PERIOD - noon, Monday, Dec 6, 2021 to noon, Friday, Dec 17, 2021
Candidate filing was suspended by NC Supreme Court Order on Dec 8, 2021.

Filing resumes 8am, Thursday, Feb 24, 2022 and ends noon, Friday, Mar 4, 2022


PARTISAN OFFICES

Partisan races will be on the respective party's primary ballot if more than 1 candidate per seat for the same party files for office in December 2021

  • Races: Federal, State, Judicial, and County races
  • Parties: Democratic, Republican, Libertarian
    • US Senate
    • US 12th Congressional District
    • Superior Court Judge District 25B
    • District Court Judge District 25 (7 Seats)
    • District Attorney District 36
    • NC Senate District 45
    • NC House District 89 or NC House District 96 (county is split between the two districts)
    • Sheriff
    • Board of Commissioners (3 Seats)
    • Clerk of Superior Court
  • The partisan races above may be in the MaY Primary if more than one candidate per seat of the same party files for office. Otherwise, their name will automatically advance to the November ballot.

  • Unaffiliated Voters may choose which party's ballot they wish to vote

NON-PARTISAN OFFICES

Non-Partisan races will appear on the November 8th ballot. Candidate filing for these offices begin June, 2022.

  • Catawba County School Board (4 seats)
  • Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor (2 Seats)

MUNICIPAL OFFICES

Non-Partisan Municipal races for residents of Long View and Hickory

  • Town of Long View | Mayor, Alderman Wards 2, 5 - ward races are only for residents of those wards
  • City of Hickory | Mayor, Alderman Wards 4, 5, 6
    Note: if a Hickory Primary is needed, it will be held May 17th and the Hickory Municipal election will be held during the 2022 Second Primary

THE MAY 2022 PRIMARY

Hickory and Long View Municipal Elections

The delayed City of Hickory and Town of Long View 2021 elections will be held in conjunction with the 2022 Primary Election.
A Hickory Primary for Mayor will be held during this 2022 Primary on May 17. The Hickory General Election will be held July 26, the date of the 2022 Second Primary.

2022 Primary Elections

A Primary for each Political Party may be needed if more candidates file than the number of seats available. The Primary is held for that party to determine which name will go on the November ballot.
Parties that have a ballot available during the Primary election:

  • Democratic Party
  • Republican Party

Unaffiliated voters may choose which party's ballot they wish to vote when they check in at the polling location.

The deadline to change party affiliation is 25 days before the election--no party changes are allowed at the polls.


FEBRUARY 2022


Thursday, February 24, 8am

  • Candidate Filing for 2022 Offices (including Hickory and Long View municipal offices) resumes

MARCH 2022


Tuesday, Mar 1, 5pm

  • Deadline for a candidate to withdraw notice of candidacy

Friday, Mar 4, noon

  • Candidate Filing ends

Monday, March 28

  • Absentee ballots begin mailing

Tuesday, March 29

  • First day campaign signs may be placed in DOT Right-of-Way

APRIL 2022


Friday, April 22, 5pm

  • Books Close - Deadline to change party affiliation and to register to vote on primary election day or absentee-by-mail.

MAY 2022


Saturday, May 14

  • One-Stop Early Voting ends

Tuesday, May 17, 6:30AM - 7:30PM

  • Primary Election Day - voters must vote at the polling location for their precinct (based on residential address on April 17th)
  • Catawba County voters may vote at any of the 5 One-Stop locations. Unregistered residents that missed the election-day deadline may register and vote early with proof of residency.

Friday, May 27, 11:00 AM

  • Canvass of the 2022 Primary - results are not final until Canvass

JUNE 2022


Filing for Non-Partisan Races on the November Ballot

  • Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors (2 Seats)
    SOIL AND WATER FILING PERIOD - noon, Monday, Jun 13, 2022 to noon, Friday, Jul 1, 2022
  • Catawba County School Board (4 Seats) [only for residents in the County School District]
    SCHOOL BOARD FILING PERIOD - noon, Monday, Jun 6, 2022 to noon, Friday, Jul 1, 2022

JULY 2022


Friday, July 1, noon

  • Filing ends for Catawba County School Board and Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors

Second Primary

  • Tuesday, July 26, 6:30AM - 7:30PM
    • One-Stop: Thursday, July 7 - Saturday, July 23
    • Canvass: Friday, August 5, 11:00AM


    OCTOBER 2022


    Friday, Oct 14, 5pm

    Books Close - Last day to change your party affiliation and to register to vote on election day or absentee-by-mail

    • Check Your Registration Verify your information is up to date. If not, submit a new registration form before the deadline.
    • Mailed registration forms must be clearly postmarked by this date. Late registrations will be processed after Canvass (Nov 18)

    Thursday, Oct 20

    • One-Stop Early Voting Begins
    • Catawba County voters may vote at any of the 5 One-Stop locations. Unregistered residents that missed the election-day deadline may register and vote early with proof of residency.

    NOVEMBER 2022


    Tuesday, Nov 1

    • Last day to request and Absentee-by-Mail ballot (no ballots will be mailed out after this date)

    Saturday, Nov 5

    • One-Stop Early Voting Ends

    Tuesday, Nov 8 - General Election

    • Polls open 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM. On election day, you are required to vote at YOUR assigned precinct's polling location.

    Friday, Nov 18 - Canvass

    • All votes reported on election night are UNOFFICIAL until the Board reviews any provisional votes and supplemental absentee votes at Canvass.
