Ice Cream in A Bag
Saturday, February 8 at 10 am
In honor of Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, teens can learn to make their own vanilla ice cream in a bag. Recommended for ages 12+. Please bring a towel along. Registration required.

Soup for the Soul
Monday, February 10 at 5:30 pm
Presented in English and Spanish

Soup warms the soul, is easy on your food budget, and makes good use of leftovers from the refrigerator. Although the process can be complicated or simple, we'll be sure to create soups your family will enjoy.

Valentine Crafternoon
Tuesday, February 11 from 4-6 pm
Drop in and make Valentine’s Day-themed crafts to give to your friends and family.

Paws to Read
Tuesdays, February 11 and 25 at 4:30 pm
Children are invited to read to a trained therapy dog, like Russ or Charlie. Call for an appointment. 

Teen Treat Yo' Self
Friday, February 14 at 4 pm
For Valentine’s Day, we'll enjoy awesome self-care activities like journaling, meditation, snack-making, and more.

Zumba
Mondays at 6 pm
Kick off your week with this dance/movement activity that’s too much fun to call exercise. Appropriate for every skill and ability level and open to ages 14+ (parental signature required for teens under 18). Note: On February 10, 17 and 24, we'll meet in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist (300 N Main Ave, Newton). Please use the Ashe Ave entrance.

English as a Second Language Classes
Mondays at 6:30 pm (conversation/intermediate) and Tuesdays at 5:30 pm (beginner)
Through instruction and conversation, class participants will gain confidence and skills in speaking, reading, and comprehension. Registration required.

Yoga Align
Saturdays at 10 am
This class complements the body's natural movement, using alignment poses to train for proper placement and to prevent injury. Build confidence as you gain mobility, stability, and strength. Perfect for any skill level; modifications are offered. Participants should bring a yoga mat or thick towel for floor work. Open to ages 14+ (parental signature required for teens under 18).

Community Garden Workday
Saturday, February 8 and Tuesday, February 18 from 9 am-12 noon
Join us as we mulch, weed, plant, repair, prune, build, amend, and take care of all the wonderful things that need to be done in the library's garden. Call 828.465.8665 to sign up.

Gift Basket Tips and Tricks
Saturday, February 8 at 2 pm
Learn all the secrets of local avid gift basket creator Liz Moose. She'll demonstrate her technique while preparing a Valentine’s Day gift basket. One lucky attendee will win a drawing to take it home.

Friends of the Catawba County Library Meeting

Help the library fulfill its mission by planning and participating in efforts to raise funds and increase access. Meets each second Monday.

Educated…A Performance Reading  
Wednesday, February 12 at noon at CVCC's East Wing Auditorium and Wednesday, February 19 at 10 am at The Green Room Community Theatre in Newton
CVCC’s play production class presents a reader’s theater-style performance of selected passages from the book Educated. Students will bring to life certain stories that author Tara Westover shares, offering oral interpretations of a text not originally intended to be read aloud.

Meditation Group
Friday, February 14 at 11 am
Meditation – the intentional practice of cultivating mindfulness – has been shown to reduce stress, lessen anxiety, lengthen attention span, increase imagination and creativity, reduce chronic pain, and increase patience. Enjoy the chance to experience meditation and learn some tips to help you cultivate mindfulness well into 2020.

Silent Book Club

SBC is a space for introverts to socialize, choose their level of social interaction, meet new friends, and read in companionable silence. Bring your lunch and make some headway in your to-be-read pile!

Suffragist Tea

Join us at the historic Lyerly House (310 N Center St, Hickory) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and of the League of Women Voters. Enjoy live music, tea and cake, and suffrage-themed craft projects. 

Upcoming! Hearts & Minds Book Club
Thursday, March 26 at 5:30 pm
This new quarterly book club focuses on helping people be healthier physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially. Topics will include nutrition, exercise, relationships, positive habits, and community wellness. Our first quarter selection is Well: What We Need to Talk About When We Talk About Health by Sandro Galea. The short work challenges us to take a broader view of health than ever before and urges us to look at structural components of wellness that we usually ignore. Following our March 26 discussion, we’ll announce our next selection.

Craftsman Collaborative: Backyard Birding
Tuesday, February 11 at 6 pm
Share a love of crafting, art, ideas, and talent in the Craftsman Collaborative series. Each month, we feature a new artisan to talk about his or her passions. In February, Jean McAnulty, Catawba County Extension Master Gardener volunteer, will share her love of birds. School-aged children and adults are welcome to hear about bird identification in anticipation of The Great Backyard Bird Count that happens February 14-17. The bird-counting exercise helps provide a real-time snapshot of bird populations. 

Yoga for All Ages

This monthly class is great for beginners, families, and advanced students! Please bring your own mat or towel.

Our first quarter pick for 2020 is In the Country of Women: A Memoir by Susan Straight. We’ll have a closing discussion online on March 19 and announce our next quarterly selection at that time.
