Spooky Season at Your Library
Published: October 02, 2024
As the nights grow longer and the air turns crisp, the library becomes an enchanting haven for all things spooky and hosts a variety of activities for enthusiasts. Explore the library’s collection of horror novels and scary movies. Delve into local folklore at the Local History Room to uncover regional legends. Channel your creative energy through crafts and STEAM programs for all ages. Make friends who also enjoy the spookier things in life through book clubs and programs.
The library might not be your first thought when you think about spooky season, but here are a few reasons why you should!
Haunting Reads: The library is a vault for horror novels, ghost stories, and eerie classics (not to mention scary movies). You can discover new authors or revisit old favorites. Ask your librarian for help finding your next scary story to tell in the dark.
Crafts and Activities: The library is offering spooktacular craft and STEAM programs for all ages including movie night, Halloween trivia, pumpkin painting, trick-or-treating for teens, spooky science, and building your own graham cracker haunted house!
Community Connection: The library offers great ways to connect with fellow spooky enthusiasts, through book clubs or community events. Wear your Halloween best and impress all of your new haunts...we mean friends.
Spooky Events: In addition to craft and STEAM programs, the library is partnering with the Catawba County Museum of History for an exhilarating ghost tour of Downtown Newton based on real life experiences and history!
Research Local Legends: Dive into local history and folklore. You can uncover ghost stories, unsolved crimes, or urban legends from right here in Catawba County, including the legend of the boiled corpse in Newton or the Woman in White at the Hickory Community Theatre!
All of these stories and more can be found in our local history room (also known as the Rhodes Room). The local history collection includes cemetery records, newspaper archives, now and then photos of different areas in the county, history of local buildings and homes, materials to help you trace your ancestors and family history, and yes, even accounts of hauntings throughout the area.
If you have ever experienced something paranormal in your home, visit the Rhodes Room to find out who used to live in your house and more about their past. You might be able to find some common ground with your ghostly roommate or help solve an ancient family mystery that breaks their connection to the living realm.
This Halloween season, visit your library and get lost in the pages of something delightfully creepy!
