What is Zumba?

Zumba is an exercise fitness program created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez during the 1990’s. The fitness class is also referred to as Zumba Fitness Party.  Zumba Fitness Party is a mix of chorography, music, fitness variations that involves hollering and lots of sweat and most important, it’s fun!

What do you like about it and what are the benefits?

What I like about it is that we’re dancing and staying in shape at the same time. It’s a stress reliever. I love being around positive energy and socializing. You end up with a Zumba extended family. I’m a Zumba instructor and also a student.  I take my Zumba class with Honey. Maria is another instructor that has been working with me and letting me know what I need to work on. I can say that you end up with an extended Zumba family not just friends.  We get together, share goals and support each other.

You just started teaching Zumba. How did you get started teaching? What inspired you to start teaching?

I started Zumba because when I was young I used to love to Salsa dance. We tend to fall in a routine and forget what we love to do. My husband loves to ride motorcycles and of course I needed my hobby, too.  I have friends that teach Zumba and asked them about their opinion. Took a Zumba B1 training became licensed in June and from there I took off taking more trainings which include Zumba Gold and Zumba Kids learning as much as I can because I want to have a strong foundation. I love the fact that I’m doing what I love and at the same time it’s a Zumba Fitness Party!

Any fun or interesting stories you’d like to share about teaching Zumba?

I was setting the room ready to teach my first Zumba class at Indoor Soccer in Newton. I had a gentleman that walked in there and asked me if he could bring his sister. He mentioned that she has a disability. She came the following week and she was front row and danced for the whole hour. That day she shared that she has been training to lose weight and she also has a personal trainer. She’s been coming to class and her excitement is contagious. She really inspires me in a way that is hard to describe.  I want to be that amazing instructor for my students.
