CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY & PROTECTION CENTER (DSS): Karen Henson, Outpatient Therapist
Years with the County: 18

Briefly describe your job. What do you do?
I provide therapy to children who have experienced trauma, mostly sexual abuse. I am part of a Multidisciplinary Team response when there is an allegation or suspicion of abuse.

What is your favorite aspect of your job – what do you enjoy doing most?
I’m aware that when I meet a child, they are no longer holding a dark, hurtful secret and it’s an honor to help them heal and grow.  Watching smiles return and confidence build never gets old!

What is the County core value you believe most relates to the work you do, and why?
I believe it’s “Doing It Together”. The CAC model is built on a collaborative, multidisciplinary team approach and I fully believe we are stronger together!  Children and families benefit when we work together to keep them safe and help them heal. I am thankful to be part of the team!

Where did you grow up?
I’m originally from a small town in Upstate NY.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my son and his family, live music, hiking, reading and spending time with friends.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
If I had a superpower, it would be to keep children safe from harm and eliminate the need for my job!
