Cooking with Essential Oils

Essential oils have proven popular in soaps, lotions, and other beauty products, but did you know that you can use them to enhance and flavor foods too?

There are basically two techniques for incorporating essential oils into dishes. The first is by adding a flavored oil if you’re missing the fresh ingredient. For example, if you need lemon zest or basil but don’t have the real thing, a small addition of the essential oil can provide similar flavor benefits. This is essential oil as a substitute.

You can also use the oil to impart an exotic taste to conventional foods. Perhaps you want to create lavender whipped cream for a bridal shower or add a note of cardamom to brownies. Adding these oils allows you to infuse a dish with a flavor that you might not ordinarily expect. This is essential oil as experimentation.

At our workshop, we’ll learn to use edible essential oils to brighten the flavors of different foods, and we’ll try our hand at making salad dressings and other dishes with them. If you’d like to join us, meet at the Main Library in Newton at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, November 7.

Although herbs, spices, and oils are natural, they can impact people differently, so be aware of using the best-quality oils for ingestion, and understand that the quantity of essential oil consumed should be addressed with care on an individual basis.
