Biodiesel Partnership |
| In October 2014 in an effort to improve the economic benefit (including increased fuel production) of the Biodiesel Facility and in keeping with the guidelines of the EcoComplex to facilitate the incubation of new business and industry in the County, the Board of Commissioners entered into a lease agreement with Blue Ridge Biofuels, LLC for the lease of the Biodiesel Production Facility.
Blue Ridge Biofuels produces and distributes biodiesel for Western North Carolina and the Southeast bulk market. Biodiesel is a clean-burning renewable alternative to petroleum diesel fuel. It can be used in any diesel engine, including on road vehicles, off road equipment, and #2 home heating oil furnaces. No modifications are necessary to use biodiesel, which is often sold blended with petroleum diesel. Biodiesel is better for the environment because it has lower green house gas emissions than conventional petroleum diesel. It also provides superior mechanical benefits and extends engine life.
Blue Ridge Biofuels expects to expand into new markets, since they are the first biodiesel producer in the Charlotte area to make fuel from used cooking oil. The company embraces not only biodiesel, but also the community connections: from farmers who grow oil crops, to restaurants that recycle their used cooking oil, to the partners in the green economy, and the customers who use biodiesel to heat their homes, run their vehicles, and power their businesses.
