STEAM: Quill & Ink
Published: January 17, 2019
In the midst of electronic media and correspondence, there’s still room for a fun exploration into tradition. Next week, the Library is introducing teens to the old-fashioned way of writing – by hand – and going a step further than just pencils and pens.
In our upcoming session, we’ll teach participants to make their own quill pens (yep, like the ones with a plume!) and then let them experiment with hand lettering and calligraphy using this unexpected writing instrument. It may seem relatively straightforward, but it takes a bit of practice to get things looking good!
We’ll also talk about how teens (or anyone) can participate in an annual program called InCoWriMo. Taking place each February, it challenges people to handwrite a note or letter to someone each day of the month. Not only is it a fun way to learn about how certain life tasks were carried out before email and social media, but it’s also a lesson in the effort and time that went into communications in an earlier era.
Our STEAM: Quill & Ink workshop takes place at 3 pm on Tuesday, January 22 at the Main Library in Newton.
