STEAM: Punkin' Chunkin'
Published: October 16, 2018
Good-natured hijinks are as much a part of Halloween as costumes and trick-or-treating. In lieu of activities like rolling houses with t.p., however, consider our science-based STEAM program instead. You’ll get all the benefits of an educational pastime with a solid dose of contained rowdiness!
Punkin’ chunkin’ – for the benefit of the uninitiated – is essentially a lesson in physics that involves building homemade catapults and then launching a candy pumpkin to see who can propel it the farthest and the most accurately. The competitive program prompts kids to use their engineering and critical thinking skills as they determine the best strategies for optimal arc, distance, and speed. It can be a little tough, but it’s undoubtedly a great deal of fun!
If your elementary-aged child would like to commit his or her skills to the punkin’ chunkin’ battle, please call the Library at 828.428.2712 to sign up. Who knows? This entertaining exercise could be the spark for a career in physics, propulsion, or perhaps even rocket science!
The activity takes place Saturday, October 27 at 11 am at the Maiden Branch Library.
