STEAM: Got Plants?
July 25, 2018
Especially during the summer when vegetation is flourishing, we have a tendency to take for granted the role of plants in the ecosystem and in the health of the planet. But as factories for producing oxygen and engines for moderating temperatures, these organisms are invaluable in how they make human life comfortable and possible.
At our upcoming STEAM session for kids, we’ll be illustrating the critical role of these life-sustaining entities. We’ll talk about roots, leaves, photosynthesis, chlorophyll, and the rest of their components and processes. Although plants seem to be relatively simple, they’re much more complex (and even responsive) than we might imagine, so we’ll dig into what makes them so beneficial to the planet.
Along with the science lesson, we’ll also have a little fun! We'll learn about the edible parts of plants – from bud to leaf to root – and enjoy some healthy snacking (with healthy dips)! And while vegetables are usually designated as our go-to plants for eating, we’ll talk about what other types of plants we might – and can – consume.
We’ll gather on Monday, July 30 at 5:30 pm at the Main Library in Newton.
