Practice Your English Skills
September 04, 2018
If English isn’t your native language and you’d like to increase your understanding and fluency, take advantage of the English as a Second Language (ESL) classes the Library is offering in September. We’re intent on ensuring that people who could benefit from the boost in language skills and conversational comfort have the resources they need to flourish.
The sessions are completely free, open to the public, and do not require reservations to attend. All that’s necessary is that you show up ready to learn and prepared to participate. While many people are Spanish speakers first, anyone of any background should feel welcome to join the group. There’s no pressure to walk away with a perfect command of English, just to get in some time for education and practice.
A bilingual library staff member will lead the course, sharing tips to overcome tendencies that ESL students struggle with naturally, and an English-speaking staff person will help participants refine idioms, sentence structure, and more during conversation sessions. Both of them want to see attendees strengthen their abilities, whether it’s for work, school, or everyday life in the community.
If you’d like to polish your own skills, please come out to the Main Library in Newton each Monday in September (10, 17, and 24) at 5:30 pm. The environment is friendly, open, and laid-back, so leave your hesitations at the door. You’ll do great, and you’ll come away with a better grasp of how English works in practical, real-life situations!
