Have You Tried Tai Chi?
Published: October 25, 2018
The Library’s fitness and wellness classes have been incredibly well received, and we’re excited to offer a new option for folks to enjoy. Beginning in November, we’ll be exploring the practice of tai chi at our Main Library in Newton.
Tai chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that involves slow, graceful movements, intentional breathing, and mindfulness. Originally intended to foster personal defense and health benefits, it’s now used to reduce stress and anxiety while increasing flexibility and balance. Some practitioners like to think of it as meditation in motion.
The class is suitable for people of all fitness levels, and it’s open to anyone aged 14 and up (teens under 18 must have a parental signature to participate). The class will meet on Thursdays at 4 pm except for the Thanksgiving holiday on the 22nd. The November 1 class will meet outside, weather permitting.
If you’re already doing something active or intense, like Zumba or weightlifting, tai chi will be a worthwhile counterbalance, and if you’re just getting started on a fitness regimen, it’s a terrific way to bring a healthy discipline to your schedule. Come see what it’s all about!
