Career Opportunities with Catawba County Sheriff's Office

A Deputy needs to complete BLET - Basic Law Enforcement Training. It is offered as a 6-month course at most community colleges; See details below.

Detention Officers do not have to complete BLET. There is a month long course that we pay for after we hire a detention officer.

Applications are available in Sheriff’s Office and Detention reception. We do not mail the application, however anyone may pick-up the form on-site. Applicants must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED)
  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Hold a valid North Carolina driver's license
  • Have a background free from criminal offenses

Deputies start at $36,476 ($17.54 per hour)

Detention Officers start at $31,509 ($15.15 per hour)

We usually have hourly part-time positions open. Full-time Officers are hired from the part-time staff (unless applicant has prior law enforcement experience). Promotion is performance based.

The Sheriff's Office also offers extra pay for those who are bi-lingual. This extra pay can be obtained by a testing procdure and is given as needed within the department.


Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Sponsorship

When to apply
Sponsorship is provided in accordance with the local school schedules, and will be accepted during the months of APRIL (for classes starting in July & August) and SEPTEMBER (for classes starting in December & January) ONLY.

Who can apply
In order to be eligible for sponsorship to a BLET program, you must:

  • Be at least 20 years of age (must be 21 to be an Officer)
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent (GED)
  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Hold a valid North Carolina driver's license
  • Be living in Catawba County
  • Have a background free from criminal offenses
  • Complete application packet with local BLET program

BLET Sponsorship Process

In order to apply for BLET sponsorship, an individual may obtain a sponsorship packet from Catawba County Sheriff’s Office during regular business hours. Completed packets submitted with-in the months of APRIL or SEPTEMBER will be reviewed. Letter with our recommendation will be sent to school and applicant with-in 4 to 8 weeks. Our agency will not be responsible for any cost incurred during your school.
